Just after arriving in Madrid Spain, I was already falling in love with the architecture, the tapas, and the culture. This city is a bigger city to navigate, but I will be sharing things to do in Madrid. Below is a quick guide travel guide to visiting this beautiful city.
Visit the Palacio Real
Formerly, this was the palace where the royal family of Spain lived. Now, this beautiful building is used only for state functions. You can purchase tickets to view the courtyard and interiors of the palace. A great way to learn a little about Spanish history.
Take a Walking Tour from Plaza Mayor
Of course, you should visit this historic square, but another thing you can do is taking a free walking tour from Plaza Mayor. Usually, I like to take a bus tour to learn about cities, but since this city has small streets and alleyways a walking tour seemed like a better idea. During the walking tour, we learned about Spanish History that took place here.
Eat at San Miguel Market
A great way to have a tapas and cava break is to explore the San Miguel market just a short walk from the Plaza Mayor. Because this is in a touristy neighborhood, the prices will be a little higher than usual, but still reasonable! Not only do they have different tapas, but they also sell wines by the bottle and tourist souvenirs.
Tip: There is not a lot of seating available in this market, mostly standing room available. Also, San Miguel gets very crowded at times!

Picnic in Buen Retiro Park
I was so impressed by Buen Retiro Park! First off, it is huge with many different vignettes to explore from sculptures, ponds, galleries, and the Cristal Palace. Pick a nice spot and having a picnic would be a great way to spend an afternoon in here!
Visit Museo del Prado
Art fanatics anyone? This museum has a wide collection of European art and is home to many famous paintings including The Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymus Bosch, and my personal favorite Las Meninas by Diego Velázquez.
Tip: The museum offers free entry from 6 PM-8 PM Monday-Saturday, and Sunday from 5 PM-7 PM. Just be aware that there will be long lines to enter.
Shop in El Rastro
A great local thing to do in Madrid is shop the open-air flea market El Rastro located south of the La Latina metro station. There you will find a variety of new and used products for a great price!
Tip: This market only takes place on Sunday from 9 AM-3 PM and expect crowds.

Churros & Chocolate at San Gines
What is a visit to this cityt without churros and chocolate? Operating since 1894 San Gines is the best place to order this Spanish treat!
Tip: Open 24 hours for your churros and chocolate cravings!

Hope you enjoyed this list of things to do in Madrid!
