Spanx Air Essentials Review: Are They Worth the Hype?

I’ve been wearing Spanx Air Essentials since the collection was known as AirLuxe. AKA, it’s been a few years, and I’ve had plenty of time to put this fabric to the test.

There’s a reason Air Essentials has become so popular. The fabric has been imitated and duped countless times, but Spanx really set the standard for that buttery-soft, bouncy material that somehow makes loungewear look effortlessly chic and put-together while still being ridiculously comfortable.

Over the years, I’ve tried dozens of Spanx Air Essentials pieces and colorways, from the iconic Wide Leg Pants and Half Zip to jumpsuits, tees, tunics, and limited-edition releases.

So, is Spanx Air Essentials actually worth the hype and the price? I’m sharing my firsthand experience with the fabric, sizing and fit, plus the five pieces I’ve tried and which ones I think are actually worth buying.

My Honest Spanx Air Essentials Review

After years of wearing Spanx Air Essentials, it’s still one of the first things I reach for when I’m headed to the airport. I’ve traveled in it countless times, worn it around the house, and styled it for everyday outfits. It’s one of those rare fabrics that’s ridiculously comfortable but still makes you feel put together.

Spanx Air Essentials Fabric & Quality

There’s a reason Spanx Air Essentials is so often imitated. The fabric has a buttery-soft, almost bouncy feel that’s hard to recreate.

In my opinion, Spanx changed the game for loungewear. Before Air Essentials, I associated loungewear with heavier cotton sweatshirts and traditional sweats. This fabric made it feel genuinely chic and fashionable.

Despite how plush it feels, it’s surprisingly lightweight and drapes beautifully without feeling bulky. It’s that combination of comfort, movement, and polish that makes Air Essentials so different from traditional loungewear.

How Does Spanx Air Essentials Hold Up?

In my experience, Spanx Air Essentials holds up beautifully wash after wash. I wash mine in cold water, and while the care instructions allow for tumble drying, I personally prefer to air dry my pieces for the best longevity.

I learned this the hard way after some of my older black Air Essentials pieces faded from higher heat in the dryer. Since switching to air drying, they’ve kept their color much better.

One thing to watch for is snagging. The fabric doesn’t necessarily pill easily, but because of its smooth, soft finish, I’ve had the occasional thread pull from something as simple as a rough nail or hangnail. You don’t need to baby it, but it’s something to be aware of.

Overall, though, the bounce, shape, and softness hold up incredibly well. Some of my Air Essentials pieces are nearly five years old and are still in my regular rotation.

Spanx Air Essentials Sizing & Fit

Overall, I find Spanx Air Essentials to run true to size with a relaxed, comfortable fit. I typically wear a Large in the tops and prefer an XL in the bottoms. According to the size chart, I could wear a Large in the pants, but I personally like a looser, more relaxed fit.

I also love the inclusive sizing. Air Essentials is available up to a 3X, and many of the pants come in petite, regular, and tall inseams, so it’s easier to find the right length without tailoring.

Spanx Air Essentials Half Zip Review

The Spanx Air Essentials Half Zip is probably one of my most-worn pieces from the entire collection. It’s one of those easy throw-on pieces that instantly makes an outfit look more chic and elevated, even though you’re technically still wearing loungewear.

I love it with the matching Wide Leg Pants for a sporty-chic set, but I wear it just as often on its own with jeans or layered over a T-shirt. It’s perfect for travel days, running errands, school drop-offs, practices, or really anywhere you want to be comfortable and still look put together.

It’s also a great year-round layer because the fabric is lightweight enough that it never feels bulky, but still cozy enough for fall and winter. The Half Zip runs true to size, and I wear my usual Large. Plus, it comes in classic shades and limited-edition colors, and I’ve owned this one in countless colors over the years.

Spanx Air Essentials Wide Leg Pants Review

Another all-time favorite of mine is the Spanx Air Essentials Wide Leg Pants. They look instantly chic paired with the matching Half Zip, but I wear them just as often on their own with a simple T-shirt, sweater, or jacket.

The wide-leg silhouette is what really makes these pants stand out. The fabric drapes so beautifully and gives them an elegant, polished look while still feeling like loungewear. They also have an adjustable drawstring waist, so you can customize the fit. I personally size up to an XL because I prefer my pants to have a looser, more relaxed fit.

My one major complaint? No pockets! It keeps the silhouette looking sleek and seamless, but I definitely miss having somewhere to quickly put my phone, especially when I’m traveling.

Spanx Air Essentials Long Sleeve Shaw Collar Jumpsuit Review

If you love the simplicity of the Half Zip and Wide Leg Pants, consider the Spanx Air Essentials Jumpsuit your new best friend. This is one of those pieces you can throw on without even thinking and instantly look put together.

My favorite feature is the clever opening in the back that makes using the restroom so much easier. Instead of having to take off the entire jumpsuit, you can simply pull down the bottoms. It solves one of my biggest complaints about traveling in a jumpsuit, which is why I actually love wearing this one on travel days.

Even better, the jumpsuit has pockets! Between the pockets, easy bathroom access, and ridiculously comfortable fabric, it makes such a great travel or everyday outfit. You can dress it up with accessories or keep it casual with sneakers. I prefer an XL for a looser, more relaxed fit through the bottoms.

Spanx Air Essentials Tee Review

Another new favorite of mine is the Spanx Air Essentials Tee. Move over, basic T-shirts, because once you feel this fabric, you’re going to want to reach for this one every time. The ridiculously soft, luxurious fabric drapes beautifully on the body and instantly makes a simple T-shirt outfit look more elevated.

I especially love this one for warmer travel days when I don’t necessarily need the Half Zip. The black is so easy to style with the matching pants, jeans, or really any bottoms in your wardrobe. It’s also become one of my favorite pieces to throw on when I need to leave the house quickly but still want to look like I put some effort into my outfit.

The Tee doesn’t come in as many colors as some of the other Air Essentials pieces, but it’s such a great elevated basic. I wear my usual size Large.

Spanx Air Essentials Tunic Review

One of my favorite surprise pieces from the collection is the Spanx Air Essentials Tunic. It has a longer silhouette than the classic Crewneck, giving you a little more coverage in the back, which I love when I’m in the mood for something extra cozy.

I especially love styling it with the Wide Leg Pants for a comfortable matching look, but the longer length also makes it perfect with leggings or jeans. It’s the one I reach for when I want maximum comfort and a little more coverage while still looking put together.

I actually brought this set with me on a cruise and wore it as my airplane outfit, then again for cozy mornings walking around the ship and heading to the spa. So many of the cruise staff complimented the outfit and asked where it was from because it looked so comfortable and cozy. If that doesn’t say enough about this set, I don’t know what does!

I call the Tunic a surprise favorite because I haven’t seen it released in nearly as many colorways as some of the other Air Essentials pieces, but I absolutely love the longer silhouette.

Is Spanx Air Essentials Good for Travel?

Spanx Air Essentials is the perfect travel option, especially when you have a 6 a.m. flight and haven’t given your airport outfit a second thought. It’s something I can easily grab and go because I know it’s going to look good and travel well.

I’ll either throw on the matching Half Zip and Wide Leg Pants or grab the jumpsuit when I really don’t want to think about putting an outfit together.

I’ve worn Air Essentials on everything from short flights between New York and Miami to long-haul travel. I typically layer a T-shirt underneath the Half Zip so I can easily take it on and off depending on the temperature of the plane or my destination.

The fabric is lightweight enough for warmer destinations but still cozy on a chilly flight, and it’s incredibly comfortable to sit in for hours.

Best of all, it doesn’t wrinkle easily, so I can step off the plane still looking polished and put together. It’s one less decision to make on a travel day, and that alone makes it a staple in my suitcase.

If you’re looking for versatile, luxurious loungewear that looks just as good as it feels, I absolutely think Spanx Air Essentials is worth it.

I’ve owned some of my pieces for nearly five years, and I still reach for them to lounge around the house, run errands, and, of course, for travel days.

There’s a reason this fabric has been imitated so many times. It’s that good.

Yes, I find Spanx Air Essentials runs true to size. I wear a Large in the tops, which matches the size chart.

I personally size up to an XL in the bottoms because I prefer a looser, more relaxed fit, but according to the size chart, I would also be a Large.

Do Spanx Air Essentials Pants Run Long?

Spanx Air Essentials pants run slightly long, but they come in petite, regular, and long inseams. At 5’10”, I’m actually between the regular and long lengths.

The long touches the floor on me and works best with a chunkier sneaker, while the regular is slightly shorter than I prefer.

Does Spanx Air Essentials Shrink or Pill?

In my experience, Spanx Air Essentials does not shrink or pill. I’ve even put mine in the dryer and the fit has stayed the same. However, the fabric can occasionally snag on something like a rough nail and pull a thread.

You don’t need to baby it, especially considering I regularly wear mine for travel, but I am a little careful around anything that could catch the fabric.

Can You Put Spanx Air Essentials in the Dryer?

Yes, Spanx Air Essentials can be tumble dried on low, but I personally prefer to air dry mine.

I’ve noticed some fading on my older black pieces after years of using the dryer, so air drying has been my go-to for keeping the colors vibrant and extending the life of the fabric.
