Itās official: fall fashion is back, and apparently 2026 decided subtle was getting a little boring.
After several seasons of quiet luxury, oversized everything, and very safe neutrals, this fall feels a lot more fun. Weāre getting bold color, interesting jackets, texture, animal prints, romantic details, and some shoe trends that may require a little convincing.
The good news? You absolutely do not need an entirely new wardrobe. A lot of these trends can be worked into pieces you already own, while a few strategic additions can instantly make your closet feel more current.
Here are the biggest fall fashion trends for 2026 that I think are actually worth knowing about and wearing.

Fall 2026 Color Trends
Color is probably the easiest way to make your wardrobe feel updated without completely changing how you dress. And while our classic fall neutrals aren’t disappearing, 2026 is definitely giving us a few more interesting options.

Espresso Brown
If you stocked up on brown last fall, congratulations. Youāre already ahead of the game.
Brown is sticking around for 2026, but Iām especially loving the really deep espresso brown shades. Think of it almost as the new black: rich, neutral, incredibly easy to style, and gorgeous mixed with denim, cream, gray, and other shades of brown.
Cobalt Blue
This might be my personal favorite color trend of the entire season. Cobalt blue is showing up everywhere, and it feels so refreshing compared with the typical muted colors we associate with fall.
Itās definitely a statement, but surprisingly wearable. Try a cobalt sweater with jeans or trousers if you want an easy way to bring a little color into your fall wardrobe.

Pops of Red
Red tried to have its moment last year, but I think fall 2026 is when it really takes off.
And you donāt necessarily need a head-to-toe red outfit. A red sweater, sneaker, bag, or even a small accessory gives a neutral fall outfit that perfect little pop of color.
Chartreuse Green
That martini-olive-meets-chartreuse green we saw last year is sticking around, and Iām seeing it move beyond clothing into shoes and bags too. Itās definitely one of the bolder trends on this list, but against all those fall browns? So good.
The Biggest Jacket Trends for Fall 2026
Iām officially declaring 2026 the year of the jacket. There are so many interesting silhouettes happening that your outerwear can basically become the entire outfit.
Rather than covering every jacket trend, these are the three I think will make the biggest impact.
Cropped & Shrunken Jackets

After years of oversized blazers and giant jackets, the fashion pendulum is swinging in the opposite direction.
Jackets are getting shorter, more fitted, and almost intentionally shrunken. They look especially good with high-waisted trousers, straight-leg jeans, and longer skirts because they completely change the proportions of an outfit.
Cinched-Waist Jackets

Waists are back! Weāre seeing more jackets with belts, peplum details, and tailoring that actually follows the shape of your body. If oversized outerwear has never been your thing, 2026 may finally be your year.
Barn Jackets

The barn jacket isnāt going anywhere just yet.
I love this trend because you can find versions at practically every price point now, and it gives a simple jeans-and-sweater outfit that slightly preppy, English-countryside feel. Bonus points if you eventually pair it with another major trend this season: riding boots.

Fall 2026 Texture Trends
If thereās one overarching theme this year, itās texture. Instead of relying on complicated outfits, interesting fabrics are doing a lot of the work for us.
Croc-Embossed Leather

Croc might be one of the biggest texture trends to watch this fall.
Youāll see croc-embossed bags, shoes, belts, and even jackets. If a full croc jacket feels a little aggressive, start with a bag or shoe. It adds that glossy, expensive-looking texture without taking over your entire outfit.
Tapestry Fabric

Okay, hear me out: your grandmaās couch, but make it fashion.
Tapestry and upholstery-inspired fabrics are showing up on jackets, skirts, and matching sets, bringing so much texture and personality to fall outfits. Itās definitely one of the more unexpected trends of 2026, but styled with simple basics, I think it can look incredibly chic rather than costume-y.
Suede

If you bought suede last year, do not put it away.
Suede bags, boots, and jackets are continuing straight into fall 2026. I especially love it in those rich brown tones because the texture makes an otherwise simple neutral outfit feel much more expensive.

The Denim Trend to Know
Dark Wash Denim

Forget the distressing. Fall denim is getting polished.
Weāre seeing very dark, rich indigo washes that almost make jeans look like trousers. Itās sophisticated, clean, and incredibly easy to dress up, especially when you pair dark denim with more dark denim for a chic monochromatic look.
And when it comes to the actual jean silhouette? Wear what you love. Straight, barrel, skinny, low-rise… I am not here to confiscate anyoneās favorite jeans.

Fall 2026 Pattern Trends
Patterns are getting playful again, and I am here for it.
Plaid

Plaid for fall? Groundbreaking. But this year it feels less lumberjack and more polished academia.
Think plaid trousers, midi skirts, jackets, and tailored pieces rather than just your standard flannel shirt. You only need one plaid piece to bring a lot more interest into an otherwise simple outfit. See my plaid fashion picks. Shop affordable plaid finds.
Colorful Stripes

Classic Breton stripes will always have a place in my closet, but the stripes for 2026 are getting much more colorful.
Think combinations of brown, blue, red, green, and cream rather than strictly navy and white. A colorful striped sweater with jeans might be one of the easiest outfits you can wear this fall.

The New Animal Prints

Leopard isn’t disappearing, but apparently we needed more animals in the fashion kingdom.
For fall 2026, look out for zebra, cow print, snakeskin, and even Bambi-inspired deer prints. I personally love these most in smaller doses, especially a zebra shoe or printed bag with an otherwise neutral outfit.
The Return of Ladylike Dressing
Romantic Details

Fall fashion is getting softer.
Satin, lace, sheer layers, ruffles, and other romantic details are popping up alongside all of our leather and structured jackets. I especially love mixing the two: try a feminine lace or satin skirt with a cropped leather jacket to keep the outfit from feeling overly sweet.
Column Skirts

The slim column and pencil skirt is also making its return, and it fits perfectly into this more polished, ladylike direction.
Instead of the super-short skirts weāve seen everywhere, these silhouettes are getting longer, hitting around the knee or below. Pair one with a sweater and tall boots and suddenly you look extremely put together with very little effort.

Elevated Sportswear

Sporty pieces are getting a serious upgrade for fall 2026. Think track pants or jerseys styled with more polished pieces like sweaters, button-downs, jackets, and trousers.
The trick is to mix one athletic piece with the rest of your everyday wardrobe. It gives that effortless sporty-chic look without making it seem like youāre actually headed to practice.
Fall 2026 Shoe Trends
And finally, shoes. Because sometimes changing the shoe is all you need to make clothes youāve owned for years suddenly feel current again.

Tall & Riding Boots
Instead of the super skin-tight over-the-knee boots we wore in the 2010s, the newer versions have a straighter, slightly roomier shaft. Riding boots are also coming back, which ties perfectly into the barn jackets, plaid, and countryside-inspired pieces happening this season.
Satin Shoes
Satin isn’t staying confined to dresses.
Weāre seeing satin flats and heels that have this beautiful ballet-inspired, feminine feel. Theyāre especially pretty for evening and an easy way to incorporate the romantic trend without buying an entirely new outfit. See even more sneaker trends here.
T-Strap Heels
Consider the T-strap the next evolution of the Mary Jane.
It has that same slightly vintage feel but adds a little more detail to the foot. I think this one will be especially pretty with column skirts, dresses, and tailored trousers heading into fall.
More Fall 2026 Trends to Watch

Mandarin & Funnel-Neck Jackets: Outerwear is getting more interesting around the neckline, with structured mandarin collars and dramatic funnel-neck silhouettes. I love the look of a funnel neck, although as a makeup wearer, I have questions about the practicality.
Fringe: Fringe is continuing into fall, but think less music festival and more polished. Look for it on tailored jackets, scarves, skirts, and accessories.
Asymmetrical Details: Hemlines are getting a little wonky, in the best way. Asymmetrical sweaters, tops, skirts, and even jackets are an easy way to make a simple outfit feel more interesting.
How to Wear Fall 2026 Trends Without Buying a New Wardrobe
As always, trends are supposed to make getting dressed more fun, not make you feel like everything you own is suddenly outdated.
Start with whatās already in your closet. Your brown pieces, suede bags, plaid, dark denim, stripes, and tall boots may already check several of these boxes.
Then, if you want to make your wardrobe feel a little more 2026, choose one or two trends you genuinely love. Maybe thatās a cobalt blue sweater, a cropped jacket, or a fun zebra-print shoe.
