Visiting Sayulita Mexico | Thoughts on this Chill Surf Town

A day trip to the small town of Sayulita, Mexico was non-negotiable during my stay in Puerto Vallarta, just 45 minutes away. I’ve heard so many things about this surf town, that I had to see it for myself.

If you look at Sayulita on a map, you’ll find just a few roads that line the town. Because of that, I didn’t really go in-depth about researching Sayulita.

If you are looking to visiting Sayulita, this post will hopefully convince you to check out this chill town!

How to Get to Sayulita

I took an Uber from the Marina in Puerto Vallarta all the way to Sayulita. The drive took about 45-50 minutes and cost 530 Pesos, about $30 USD.

If you are on a budget, there is a bus that runs from Puerto Vallarta to Sayulita for about $2 USD. I just wanted to get there faster with the least amount of headaches.

While you can take an Uber to Sayulita, getting an Uber in Sayulita is not allowed. To get back to Puerto Vallarta, we had to take a taxi. We found some guys on the street in the center of town.

Initially, they quoted us 750 Pesos, but we got it down to 700 pesos. Not sure if that was a good deal, but it was starting to rain so we needed a quick way out.

Where to Stay In Sayulita

I was only there for a day trip, but I wanted to check out some accommodations of the area to see what it would be like staying overnight. I checked out Villa Amor Sayulita, and was pleasantly surprised at how beautiful it was!

Villa Amor Sayulita is made up of numerous Villas that gear towards couples, or a group of friends. Each Villa has a completely different look, offering each and every room a unique design and feel.

We checked out Las Lanchas, a two-bedroom villa with the most stunning views! The coolest thing about this room was the fact that the kitchen and living area were completely out in the open air! No walls or windows obstructing your view of the ocean!

I can imagine at night that would be such an awesome experience to hear the waves crashing on the shore. However, the bedrooms do have walls, and air conditioning super important, especially for those hot summer days.

Villa Amor is located a short walk away from the center of town. It’s a great location to get ‘away’ but still be close to all the action.

It was a bit tricky for our Uber Driver to find because one of the main roads was blocked off due to construction, but we found it by walking along the main beach pathway.

The shared spaces in the property like the pool, yoga space, and spa were just stunning. I had a great time cooling off in the double-tiered infinity pool in the August heat.

It was low season, but there was hardly anyone on the property. So, if you are looking for somewhere remote, this has to be it!

What to Expect in Sayulita

The Vibe

The remoteness of the villa compared with the center of town is quite a change, which is great if you are looking for some things to do! After a short walk from the Villa, you’ll start to feel the energy of the town. People driving golf carts instead of cars, the echo of reggae music from the surrounding bars.

One way roads act as double lanes, cars back in and out to let each other in with an inch to spare, dogs lying around on the unpaved streets, and young kids playing with old Pac-Man machines.

Sayulita has a chic shack kind of vibe, tons of quirky character, and color.

Sayulita Beach

Sayulita is known for its waves, that’s why the surfer vibe can be felt throughout the streets. The main beach is always busy, but a great place to relax and people watch.

Shopping in Sayulita

I’ve heard that shopping in Sayulita is great, handcrafted goods at a decent price! I didn’t spend too much time really checking if that was true, but I did pick up a silver necklace for 400 Pesos, approx $20 USD.

I have worn it every day even in the shower, and it hasn’t started to tarnish yet! Other items sold are clothing, leather goods, and dream catchers!

Sayulita Food

I only ate at one spot right on the main road (secretly hoping it wasn’t a tourist trap). But after paying only $12 for a few beers (4) and some fresh guacamole, the prices didn’t seem ‘tourist trap’ to me.

Sayulita won’t be the cheapest town in Mexico, but it sure isn’t the most pricy!

Would I return?

I was so taken aback by how charming this town was! I would most definitely come back and experience the town by night. That open-air living room and kitchen at the Villa Amor would be such a memorable moment! I loved how relaxed everything and everyone was!

People just looking to enjoy their time and the simple things in life. Sayulita is a great place for a honeymoon, a trip to get away for a while, or a fun place to go with friends!
