If you are planning a trip to the Amalfi Coast, figuring out what to wear can feel surprisingly stressful. The destination looks effortlessly chic online, but in reality, it is hot, humid, full of steep stairs, and involves long days that move from sightseeing to beach clubs to sunset dinners.
After visiting the Amalfi Coast almost every summer since 2018, I have learned exactly what outfits actually work once you are there and which pieces end up sitting untouched in your suitcase.
This guide breaks down what to wear on the Amalfi Coast based on real travel experience, including boat days, beach clubs, sightseeing, and romantic evenings. The goal is to help you pack strategically so your wardrobe feels effortless and cohesive from morning to night.

What to Pack for the Amalfi Coast

When planning outfits for the Amalfi Coast, it helps to think in terms of what you’re planning on doing rather than packing individual pieces.
Most trips include a mix of sightseeing, beach days, boat excursions, and romantic dinners, so your wardrobe should feel cohesive across all of them.
Hereās a simple way to plan what to pack for:
- Casual Sightseeing Outfits
- Beach Club Days
- Boat Day Excursions
- Dinner & Evening Outfits
- Day Trips to Capri or Nearby Towns
Depending on how many days you are visiting the Amalfi Coast, plan on a daytime outfit, and a separate evening outfit.
If your trip includes multiple cities, my what to wear in Italy by season guide can help you plan outfits more strategically.
The Amalfi Coast Outfit Formula
Instead of packing random pieces, I plan outfits using simple formulas that work across multiple activities.
These combinations consistently work best:
Linen set + woven bag + flat sandal
Flowy midi dress + gold jewelry + raffia clutch
Swimsuit + oversized linen shirt + comfortable slide
White sundress + statement earring + simple sandal
Lightweight trousers + relaxed tank + structured tote
Planning outfits this way keeps packing minimal while ensuring everything feels cohesive.
The Reality of Dressing in the Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast is breathtakingly romantic, but it is also physically demanding in ways most travelers do not expect.
Positano sits dramatically along the cliffside, meaning daily life involves climbing long staircases, navigating uneven stone streets, and spending hours outdoors in intense summer heat.
Mornings might begin with espresso on a sun-drenched terrace, followed by ferry rides between coastal towns, afternoons at beach clubs, and evenings walking to candlelit restaurants overlooking the water.
Because of this, clothing needs to feel breathable, lightweight, and easy to move in.
What to Wear During the Day in Positano

If I am not headed to the beach or going on a boat excursion, I like to wear casual yet polished outfits for exploring town, shopping, or scenic viewpoints. Many of these activities are covered in my full guide to the best things to do in Positano.
I usually reach for:
A simple sundress with a woven beach bag
A lightweight linen two-piece set ā find the best linen sets on Quince
Cotton poplin shorts with an oversized button-down
Linen trousers with a relaxed tank
Flowy cotton midi dresses look beautiful in photos, but more importantly, feel comfortable in the heat.

Flowy cotton midi dresses are especially perfect here. They look beautiful in photos, but more importantly, they feel good in the heat and humidity.
Whether youāre exploring steep streets, browsing small boutiques, or stopping for lunch on a terrace overlooking the water, these kinds of outfits strike the right balance between polished and comfortable.

Beach Club Days

During the summer months, a beach day is practically part of the Amalfi Coast experience. We typically rent loungers and an umbrella and spend the afternoon moving between the water and a nearby restaurant for lunch, so having a cover-up that you can easily slip back on is key.
For beach clubs, I always pack:
- A swimsuit that feels a little special
- A cover-up that is light enough to walk in
- Easy flat sandals & water shoes.
- Tote bag to carry your essentials

This Amazon crochet cover-up ended up being the perfect two-piece set that was easy to take on and off!
I also relied heavily on a structured woven tote that fit everything I needed for the day, from sunscreen, a portable charger, a water bottle, and a change of clothes. A bag like this becomes essential when youāre spending full days at beach clubs or walking back up the steep streets of Positano.
Take note, that the beaches are made up of volcanic black sand, so it gets extremely hot to walk on without shoes. I always pack these water shoes to make it easy to walk into the water!

Boat Day Outfits That Actually Work

One of the best experiences on the Amalfi Coast is spending a full day out on the water. Whether you book a private boat or join a small group tour, itās one of those days that ends up being a highlight of the entire trip. Iāve booked with BlueStar Positano, which has consistently been a great experience.
A typical boat day includes time relaxing on deck, multiple swimming stops, and often a visit to a nearby town like Amalfi for lunch. Because youāll be moving between sun, sea, and town streets, your outfit needs to feel easy to adjust throughout the day.

My go-to boat day essentials usually include:
⢠A comfortable swimsuit that you can wear for long stretches in the sun
⢠A lightweight linen shirt or button-front cover-up to throw on between stops
⢠A wide-brim sunhat or structured straw hat for extra protection
⢠A simple tote to hold sunscreen, water, and any extras
Youāll spend most of the day barefoot on the boat, so shoes arenāt as important. I usually bring a pair of flat sandals that are easy to slip on when docking in town.
What to Wear to Dinner in Positano

Dinner outfits are where the overall style feels the most elevated. Evenings in Positano have a romantic atmosphere, and many people choose slightly more polished looks compared to daytime sightseeing outfits.

I almost always wear dresses at night. Theyāre just the easiest option. You can throw one on, add simple jewelry, and youāre done.
Even at night in June, itās still warm, and most restaurants have outdoor seating, so you rarely need a jacket. If youāre traveling in late spring or early fall, itās worth having a light jacket or shall just in case.

I’ve also worn linen pants and a strapless linen top for dinner when I didn’t feel like wearing a dress. There’s not necessarily a dress code, but something resort casual always works!
When it comes to bags, I try to keep packing minimal and choose one style that works with every outfit. This woven raffia clutch has become my go-to because it transitions seamlessly from daytime exploring to evening dinners.

What to Wear on a Day Trip to Capri

No matter where youāre based on the Amalfi Coast, a day trip to Capri is always worth planning.
Youāll likely spend at least 45 minutes on the ferry, so wearing something comfortable and easy for a full day of exploring makes a big difference.
I usually keep things simple with a casual sundress. This white dress from Amazon was perfect to style, and so affordable. Itās one of those pieces that works effortlessly in Capriās resort-like setting and can be styled multiple ways.
Flat sandals keep it relaxed during the day, while a woven clutch or statement earrings instantly make it feel more polished for lunch or browsing the shops.
Shoes Youāll Actually Wear

Let’s talk footwear, because we are not dealing with smooth surfaces. The stairs are uneven stone. They can get slippery. Iāve literally seen people fall.
If youāre planning a lot of sightseeing, a comfortable sneaker can be helpful, especially for travel days or hikes.
But personally, I usually live in comfortable flat sandals. The key is choosing ones you can walk in for hours and that go with everything you packed.
The last trip I packed these comfortable Amazon sandals that worked with all my outfits, and these look for less Birkenstocks that were comfortable to wear for more strenuous activities.

Another thing people donāt realize is that the beaches have volcanic sand, which gets extremely hot. You need sandals that are easy to slip off right at the water. A water shoe is perfect for beach days- trust me on this one, or a rubber sandal you don’t mind getting wet!
In summary, you should pack these shoes:
- Flat sandal that works with all your outfits
- A Water shoe / rubber style that can get wet for the beach
- A dressy sandal for evening
- A sneaker walking around (optional)
Bags to Wear to The Amalfi Coast

You’ll want to pack at least two types of bags: a larger tote & an evening clutch bag.
During the day, I carry a larger woven beach bag that fits everything I might need because if you’re staying high up in town, once you leave for the day, you probably won’t be returning until early evening.
In my tote, I carry my packing must-haves like sunscreen, water, a book, sunglasses, and maybe a change of clothes.
At night, I switch to a smaller bag like this raffia clutch that works well with every outfit!
Packing Must-Haves
To beat the heat during the summer months, I always pack these essentials:
- Portable Travel Fan
- Reusable Water Bottle
- EU Travel Steamer
- Converters
- Water Shoes

What Men Should Wear in the Amalfi Coast

Menās style on the Amalfi Coast follows a similar vibe to womenās outfits. Most days involve a relaxed daytime look for exploring, beach clubs, or boat excursions, followed by a slightly more elevated outfit for dinner in the evening.
A helpful approach is to plan two outfits per day. One for daytime activities and one for evenings out.
For daytime, wear lightweight, breathable pieces that feel comfortable in the heat and humidity. Think swim trunks paired with a linen button-down shirt, especially if you are heading to a beach club or spending the day on a boat. Comfortable sandals or simple sneakers work well for walking around town.

Evenings tend to feel a bit more polished, but still relaxed. Men do not need to wear jackets for dinner in most places on the Amalfi Coast. However, a collared shirt instantly makes an outfit feel more appropriate for the setting. Linen or lightweight long pants paired with a long-sleeve or short-sleeve button-down is a common and effortless option.
Some restaurants, particularly in hotels or more formal settings, may have dress expectations, but in general, the atmosphere leans toward elevated resort casual. Choosing breathable fabrics and simple, well-fitted pieces will feel right in most situations.

Items That Went Untouched in My Suitcase
After visiting the Amalfi Coast multiple times, Iāve definitely learned what I donāt need to pack. These are pieces Iāve brought with me that ended up sitting untouched in my suitcase, so you can learn from my mistakes.
Sandals that are hard to walk in
While my HermĆØs Oran sandals look perfect for the destination aesthetically, Iāve found them difficult to walk in quickly on the steep, uneven streets.
Iām usually rushing to dinner reservations, and can’t walk as fast in them. I also worry about delicate shoes flattening in my suitcase, so I tend to reach for these Amazon comfortable flat sandals with a similar look that I can wear all day.
Or opt for sandals that have a supportive backing; this will make walking on the stone pathways much easier.
Clutches that are too small
If a bag canāt fit my essentials like my camera, lip gloss, keys, and phone, I wonāt wear it. Ultra-small clutches often end up staying in my suitcase. Instead, I prefer bringing one versatile evening bag that works across multiple outfits and actually holds what I need.
Thick & heavy swimsuit cover-ups
The Amalfi Coast gets extremely hot in summer, especially when walking up and down hundreds of steps. Iāve packed thicker cover-ups before and never worn them.
Lightweight options that are easy to take on and off, especially button-front styles, work much better. A linen shirt can double as a cover-up and later be styled for sightseeing.
Workout clothing
In Positano specifically, it can be challenging to fit in a traditional workout unless your hotel has a gym. The narrow streets and steep terrain make planned workouts less realistic, so I often end up not wearing the sports bras, tanks, or workout shorts I pack.
Too many casual sightseeing outfits
Unless youāre combining your trip with other Italian cities like Rome or Naples, you donāt need a large number of casual daytime looks.
Most days on the Amalfi Coast revolve around the beach or boat activities, so outfits that can double as swim cover-ups are far more useful. When I pack too many linen pants or casual tops that canāt transition into beachwear, they usually go unworn.
Sneakers
While sneakers can be useful for specific activities like hiking the Path of the Gods or navigating travel days, I find that I rarely reach for them once Iām settled on the Amalfi Coast.
Most days tend to revolve around beach clubs, boat excursions, or relaxed exploring, where comfortable flat sandals feel much more practical. I usually pack sneakers because I wear them on the plane and during transit, but once I arrive, theyāre one of the least-used items in my suitcase and can feel bulky compared to lighter footwear options.
Final Thoughts on What to Wear in the Amalfi Coast

Packing for the Amalfi Coast is really about choosing pieces that are light, versatile, and easy to wear from morning to night. Flowy dresses, breathable linen sets, comfortable sandals, and a swimsuit with a practical cover-up will carry you through most days.
Focus on simple outfits that feel polished but comfortable enough for stairs, heat, and long days out. When you pack with intention, getting dressed becomes effortless, and you can fully enjoy everything this beautiful coastline has to offer.
